Among those early adopters was art director Leonard Boyarsky. Although Boyarsky admits his memory of the meeting is slightly hazy—noting that Cain demonstrated several technologies, including voxel and 3D engines—the potential was clear.
“When we eventually brainstormed our path forward, I realized that as much as 3D seemed like the future, the technology wasn’t yet capable of supporting the high-detail visuals we required,” Boyarsky explained. “That’s why we committed to the sprite engine Cain had already finished.”
While Cain notes he might have taken the series in a different creative direction than Bethesda eventually did, he acknowledges that their massive success proves fans embraced the modern evolution of the franchise.
