Blizzard Veterans Explain How Diablo IV Lost Its “Magic” and How Their New ARPG Darkhaven Will Be Different

The creators of Diablo II are pushing back against the “over-sanitized” design of modern ARPGs, placing their bets on high-stakes chaos and unpredictability.

Moon Beast Productions, a studio forged by Blizzard veterans, recently pulled back the curtain on its debut project: Darkhaven. This upcoming action RPG features a world that is both procedurally generated and entirely destructible. The development team is led by industry icons Erich Schaefer—co-creator of Diablo and Torchlight—alongside artist Phil Shenk and lead programmer Peter Hu, both of whom were instrumental in the success of Diablo II. The developers describe Darkhaven as a “chaos sandbox,” where players have the power to not only explore the depths but literally tear the world apart.

In a recent discussion with Rock Paper Shotgun, Shenk and Schaefer weighed in on the current state of the genre, specifically addressing Diablo IV. Shenk suggested that modern ARPGs often feel “over-engineered.” In a quest to ensure perfect balance, smooth progression, and maximum player retention, developers have largely eliminated the element of surprise. According to him, this clinical approach drains the “magic” that made the early entries of the genre so captivating.

Darkhaven, by contrast, is built on a foundation of volatility. The game takes unpredictability to the extreme; if players fail to hold back the tide, the entire world can be overrun by malevolent forces and permanently destroyed. Should the world fall, the player faces a total loss of that realm, though they retain their character to begin anew in a freshly generated landscape.

The developers also touched upon their strategy for post-launch content. Moon Beast does not intend to compete with Blizzard’s massive cinematic expansions. Instead of high-budget storytelling, the studio plans to release modular updates and dynamic events that integrate seamlessly into the procedural systems, prioritizing long-term replayability over scripted spectacles.

Darkhaven does not yet have an official release date, but interested players can already add the title to their Steam wishlist.
