In a detailed retrospective video shared as the game finally went dark, Darrah confessed: “To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure I ever fully recovered from the Anthem era. I think that sentiment is shared by many who were there.”
The Truth About What Happened on Anthem – Complete (2011-2026)

Darrah went on to explain the broader consequences: “Anthem left permanent scars on careers and took a significant toll on the mental health of the staff. You can see the echoes of those struggles in the challenges BioWare has faced in the years since.”
He noted that while *Anthem* isn’t the sole cause of the studio’s recent hurdles, it planted seeds of instability that have continued to affect subsequent projects. Since *Anthem*, BioWare’s primary focus has been *Dragon Age: The Veilguard*. That RPG underwent its own identity crisis—previously titled *Dreadwolf* and even featuring a multiplayer concept at one stage—before returning to a single-player focus. Despite receiving critical praise at launch, EA CEO Andrew Wilson admitted the game struggled to resonate with a wide enough audience in an increasingly competitive environment.
Currently, the studio’s future is tied to the next *Mass Effect* title. Details remain scarce, and there is no clear timeline for when fans can expect the franchise to return to the spotlight.
Darrah concluded by noting that while massive EA franchises like *Battlefield* or *The Sims* are often given the latitude to recover from difficult launches because they are considered “too big to fail,” *Anthem* never enjoyed that level of institutional security.
