Dead Cells creators: After hits like Hades, players expect more from Steam Early Access — and that’s fair, because they’re essentially buying the game

Vasseur adds that players shouldn’t feel like they’re buying a paid demo: “The content you ship at launch must feel finished, even if development continues afterward. If the initial content seems incomplete or rough, players will see it as a paid demo, and nobody wants that. Games like Hades have set a high bar by delivering strong, polished experiences early on, so you have to create something that immediately stands out.”

Berthier acknowledges that some players will inevitably point out missing features or ask for more content. “That’s reasonable — they’re buying the game, after all — and it becomes our responsibility to meet those expectations. We’re a small team — nine people now, seven for most of production — so it’s always a challenge to deliver everything the community asks for, because players always want more.”

Windblown has progressed steadily through early access, accumulating more than 8,000 user reviews on Steam with an 89% positive rating. Berthier and Vasseur highlighted several community-driven changes, including a rework of the co-op death mechanic (previously far harsher) and refinements to the two-weapon “Alterattack” system.

“If the version you ship at the start of Early Access is genuinely subpar, that can cause lasting damage,” Berthier says. “We saw teams struggle when initial impressions were negative — it’s tough to recover player trust after that, and poor reviews can have a lasting impact. Fortunately, Windblown hasn’t faced that issue; feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive.”

“I do not know how the guys did Silksong for so many years without this”: Dead Cells creators say Steam early access was “always the plan” for new roguelike Windblown because that’s just how they make games.
