The genius of these open worlds is the ability to wander and finish dozens of side missions without ever truly advancing the main story. In fact, many players find themselves so deeply immersed in the peripheral content that finishing the primary campaign becomes almost an afterthought. I admit that I’ve rarely reached the credits of a *Fallout* game without making a deliberate, concentrated effort after already spending weeks in the world.

Beyond scope, Pagliarulo aims to modernize the experience through quality-of-life updates that address needs players might not even realize they have. “Consider the *Oblivion* remaster; people often forget that you couldn’t actually sprint in the original game,” he notes. “Naturally, we integrated that feature because the industry has moved forward, and we intend to move forward with it.”

Ultimately, it is a fantastic era to be a fan of the wasteland. Bethesda is clearly focused on evolving their systems while maintaining the massive scale that defines their legacy.

While Fallout 4’s complex, branching questlines were a departure from the more linear paths of Skyrim, they cemented the title as perhaps the most replayable entry in the series to date.
