The director’s comments follow a brief controversy that threatened to overshadow Sandfall’s achievements. The Indie Game Awards recently rescinded two honors, including a Game of the Year title, citing their strict zero-tolerance policy regarding AI assets. The discovery that any generative tech was used at all—even temporarily—led to a mix of skepticism and disappointment from parts of the gaming community.

This heightened cynicism stems from a year where blockbuster titles, including Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, have faced backlash for allegedly incorporating AI-generated content. For the moment, it appears that for many developers, these tools offer more potential for public relations headaches than genuine creative advantages.

In a turn of events, former FPS pro Shroud—who previously championed Arc Raiders for GOTY over Clair Obscur—has admitted the turn-based JRPG is actually quite impressive after finally sitting down to play it.
