João Gomes fills Arcos da Lapa with 80,000 fans and records star‑studded DVD
October 26, 2025 • Rio de Janeiro

At just 23 years old, João Gomes commanded one of Rio de Janeiro’s most iconic backdrops — the Arcos da Lapa — for a free concert on October 26, 2025, drawing an estimated 80,000 people. The evening doubled as the filming of a DVD that features a host of Brazil’s biggest names, including Ivete Sangalo and Zeca Pagodinho, plus frequent collaborators Jota.pê and Mestrinho. Other guests on the bill included Dorgival Dantas, MC Cabelinho, L7nnon, BK and Rua Vitor Vaqueirinho.
Despite temperatures near 36°C, fans gathered early and kept the energy high in front of giant screens flanking the stage. Presented in partnership with Riotur, the event included comprehensive infrastructure, public services, accessibility measures and a coordinated security and mobility plan to handle the massive crowd.
The performance started about an hour later than scheduled, but the delay did little to dampen enthusiasm; the audience roared as João took the stage and delivered his trademark warmth and charisma.
“Calm down, folks! The piseiro is about to start,” João Gomes called out as the show got underway.
He opened the night by appearing alongside his son Jorge and performing a song dedicated to him; his wife, Ary Mirelle, later joined onstage for a family moment that delighted the crowd.
The show’s production was theatrical: João invited Tarcisio do Acordeon to the beach‑inspired set, then welcomed accordionist Mestrinho and collaborator Jota.pê — key figures behind the album Dominguinho. Later, celebrated stars Ivete Sangalo and Zeca Pagodinho joined João for spirited renditions of samba favorites that sent the audience into fits of jubilation.
Below are some highlights from the night.
João Gomes’ social reach has exploded — he now counts more than 16.5 million followers across platforms. His blend of approachable charm and a string of high‑profile collaborations has reshaped how many see him: not only as a piseiro artist but as a catalytic figure in contemporary Brazilian music whose involvement tends to elevate any project.
The collaborative album Dominguinho, conceived in early 2025 with Latin Grammy winner Jota.pê and Mestrinho, spawned a dedicated tour and earned multiple award nominations, further cementing João’s momentum.
“João Gomes has a sound that builds bridges between the tradition and the future of Brazilian music,” said Bárbara Teixeira, executive producer of Tiny Desk Brasil, in a conversation with G1 about his selection to open the Brazilian edition of the program.
At the Arcos da Lapa, piseiro rang out like an ode to the nation — and João Gomes added another unforgettable chapter to Brazil’s musical story.
