Not everyone is convinced that artificial intelligence will fundamentally transform the industry.
Recently, Elon Musk announced what he described as “the first game created entirely by artificial intelligence from start to finish.”
Michael Daus, Larian Studios’ publishing director, responded and shared his perspective — he believes AI won’t solve the core problems facing the games industry:
“In truth, the industry doesn’t primarily need mathematically precise, psychologically engineered gameplay loops so much as worlds that captivate people or invite meaningful interaction. AI can serve as a useful tool, but no amount of tooling can compensate for a profound lack of compelling direction. AI will not fix the industry’s central issue — a shortage of leadership and vision.”
Michael argues that after the collapse of retail, publishers and developers failed to cultivate and maintain relationships with their audience, and as a result lost touch:
“It has become a headless-chicken dash toward profit-and-loss reports. AI won’t remedy that. Those who will succeed are the ones building things for people.”
He adds, “…Without a human touch there can be no true creation. Reducing games to cold, emotionless digital content abandons the emotional resonance players crave — and that’s precisely why people play.”
