Gamers come from every generation, but there’s something particularly heartening about older players who sink into lengthy JRPGs and life simulators. With Skyrim’s Shirley Curry stepping away from YouTube, it feels like the right moment to spotlight Britta — better known online as Food4Dogs — a passionate JRPG fan whose enthusiasm offers a charming glimpse of what growing older while loving games might look like.
Britta isn’t new to the scene: she’s been uploading gaming videos to her YouTube channel for more than seven years and regularly shares what she’s playing on social media. Her most recent tweet, for example, celebrates the arrival of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles and Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter as she poses in her garden holding PS5 copies. “The two most important Remasters this season for me,” she wrote. “I’m in JRPG heaven.”
On YouTube she describes her channel as “unboxings, with a twist: I like to talk about the back history, the graphics and music of the game, giving some context to what comes out of the box.” She also shares first impressions and gameplay across every platform she uses, offering thoughtful commentary alongside the typical reveal footage.
Fans have affectionately dubbed her “JRPG grandma” (or JRPGrandma), a nickname she hasn’t formally adopted herself — and whether she’s actually a grandparent is beside the point. Her excitement about titles like Xenoblade Chronicles X and Metaphor: ReFantazio is infectious, and seeing her posts feels a little like looking at a hopeful version of my own gaming future. I can only hope I’m as cool and as enthusiastic as she is one day.
