Morgan Park argues that Black Ops 7 has “broken” Call of Duty.
PC Gamer journalist Morgan Park published a piece that tore into the Call of Duty Next showcase, calling it a parade of “the franchise’s worst elements.”
Between the voiceover ads for Little Caesars Pizza, AMD, Monster Energy and Herman Miller chairs, we were shown Black Ops 7’s multiplayer with live commentary that swung from a 3 a.m. commercial vibe to awkward conversations about gameplay that could easily be mistaken for the most recent entries in the series.
Park points out that nobody came across as genuine. Everyone—even the hosts—seemed to be going through the motions, focused on capturing footage for streams and feigning excitement in an unconvincing way.
Park is also surprised that the usual tactics for generating hype around a new Call of Duty appear to have failed with Black Ops 7. Activision put Black Ops front and center, added a Zombies mode and grinding systems, and expanded the arsenal, yet people still call the new release “Black Ops 6 in a new wrapper.”
Perhaps it’s a sign that Call of Duty—or, more precisely, the machine that pumps out a clone of the previous game every 12 months—has begun to malfunction. Maybe two Black Ops entries in a row, coming after two Modern Warfare titles, have finally broken Call of Duty.
