Following a massive launch that saw over 12 million players join the fray, *Arc Raiders* developer Embark Studios is now mapping out an ambitious content schedule for 2026. This upcoming roadmap aims to significantly expand and diversify the extraction shooter experience throughout the next year.

In a recent discussion with GamesRadar+, design lead Virgil Watkins touched upon the team's intended pace for rolling out new maps, weaponry, objectives, and mechanical threats. Watkins noted that while the studio is currently finalizing the exact frequency of these updates, they expect to unveil a substantial roadmap for the coming months very soon. "We’re in the process of deciding the specific cadence," Watkins explained, "but players can expect a steady stream of content distributed over the next twelve months."

He further elaborated that the strategy isn't just about adding new locations for the sake of novelty. "A lot of it for us is trying to see how we can move the experience forward," he stated. "Adding a map brings a new environment, but we want to ensure every update feels thematically and mechanically cohesive. Whether it's the specific enemy types or the loot available, we want players to feel that each update—like a hypothetical 'Whatever Update'—truly changes how they engage with the game."

While concrete details remain under wraps, Watkins did dive into the design philosophy regarding map scale. Recently, traces of a "toxic swamp" event have surfaced, prompting questions about whether the team prefers sprawling environments like Blue Gate or more claustrophobic, dense locales like Stella Montis.

Watkins pointed out an interesting quirk in map perception: "Blue Gate feels massive, even if its actual land area isn't the largest in the game. Purely by the numbers, Spaceport is our biggest at roughly 1.6 by 1.4 kilometers, while Buried City and Blue Gate sit around one square kilometer. The density of the interiors really changes how 'big' a map feels to the player."

Looking ahead, Embark intends to pair new maps with unique gameplay conditions—such as varying weather or environmental hazards—to keep the meta fresh. For instance, the recently added Stella Montis introduced rarer technology and blueprints, along with map-specific threats like The Shredder. The goal is to force players to adapt their existing gear and strategies to entirely new contexts, such as finding new utility for mines, noise makers, or zip lines within specific level layouts.

Watkins was definitive about the volume of content: "There are going to be multiple maps coming this year, covering a broad spectrum of sizes. You'll see some compact, intense areas and others that are even more expansive than what we have currently."

Addressing the balance between PvE and PvP, Watkins acknowledged that map design significantly dictates player behavior. Stella Montis, with its labyrinthine corridors and locked chambers, naturally encourages more frequent player encounters. "When you build a dense, 'spider-nest' interior, it's going to evoke a certain style of play," he noted, suggesting that future maps will intentionally tilt toward different playstyles.

However, technical constraints also play a major role. Developers must balance player density and AI count against server and client performance. Watkins cited the Dam Battlegrounds as a map that pushes technical limits due to its long sightlines and high object density. Factors like spawn timing, travel speed, and loot distribution are all fine-tuned to ensure the pacing remains engaging without causing the game's engine to buckle under the strain.
