This proposed ending would have been somber, though Kuhlmann suggested players might have still “secretly saved the day” behind the scenes. “You would have preserved a flicker of hope, but the overarching reality would be that the Thalmor were winning,” he explained regarding the potential climax.

Looking back, Kuhlmann now concedes that a cliffhanger is “entirely impractical” for the franchise today. With 15 years already passed since the last main entry, leaving players on a narrative hook for another decade or more simply wouldn’t work. “You can’t finish a game and tell people you’ll resolve the story in 10 or 15 years,” he admitted.

The pressure on Bethesda is immense; according to another former lead, even if Fallout 5 or The Elder Scrolls 6 matches the quality of Skyrim, the studio will likely face a barrage of negativity from a highly expectant fan base.
