AI in Games Irritates Players as Developers Look to Cut Costs

The gaming community’s patience with artificial intelligence is reaching a breaking point. As developers increasingly pivot toward generative AI to trim production costs, they are being met with a mounting wave of public backlash.

Patrick Söderlund of Embark Studios, the team behind ARC Raiders, recently acknowledged that the outcry against AI implementation has become “sensational” in its intensity.

The studio’s experimentation with AI-generated character voices serves as a prime example. Although the technology wasn’t intended to fully replace human performers, the PC gaming community was quick to identify the synthetic elements, sparking immediate and widespread criticism.

From a corporate perspective, AI is a powerful tool for accelerating the creation of assets, dialogue, and animations, helping to mitigate the skyrocketing expenses of AAA development. However, players are pushing back against the results, citing robotic performances, uncanny animations, anatomical glitches—such as the infamous “six-finger” error—and soulless “dead eyes.” For many, the integration of these tools threatens to strip video games of their creative heart and human touch.

Industry data reflects this internal conflict: approximately 47% of developers expressed concern that AI could lead to job losses for artists, writers, and voice actors. While some proponents see the technology as a gateway to building more expansive virtual worlds, others view it as a direct threat to artistic integrity. At present, the realization that a game features AI-generated content is more likely to irritate players than it is to impress them.
