191 Japanese Developers Chose the Game of the Year — the Winner Is Predictable

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 continues its impressive streak of accolades. Following its successes at the Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards, the title has now earned significant recognition from the elite circles of the Japanese development scene.

For eleven consecutive years, Famitsu magazine has surveyed leaders in the Japanese gaming industry to identify the “Most Anticipated Game of the Year.” The award carries immense prestige, with a hall of fame that includes blockbuster titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man, Death Stranding, Elden Ring, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

In this year’s poll, which gathered insights from 191 high-profile developers and industry icons, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 emerged as the definitive winner.

The distinguished panel of voters included luminaries such as Koji Igarashi (Castlevania), Hideki Kamiya (Bayonetta, Okami), Yoshinori Kitase and Naoki Hamaguchi (Final Fantasy series), Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida (Final Fantasy XIV), Katsuhiro Harada (Tekken), and SWERY (Deadly Premonition).

The remaining positions in the top five were claimed by Ghost of Yotei, Urban Myth Dissolution Center, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Mario Kart World. Notably, the highly anticipated Death Stranding 2: On The Beach failed to secure a spot within the top five rankings this year.
