The launch of Marvel’s Wolverine has drawn considerable attention, and Digital Foundry released an in-depth technical analysis on their podcast. The so-called “gameplay” trailer showcasing the PS5 Pro received praise for its visual fidelity.
Alex from Digital Foundry pointed out a problem with the modern interpretation of the term “gameplay.”
“It feels like the term ‘gameplay’ is being stretched for trailers… you show a lot of cinematic sequences where the player has no control, and only about 10% of the trailer actually demonstrates the player controlling the camera.”
Despite the criticism, the team remained impressed. Oliver highlighted the highly detailed Wolverine model and commended the advanced skin shaders, which he found more realistic than those on some Spider-Man 2 characters. He also noted the game’s mature tone — combat featuring blood, entrails, and shards of bone — a clear contrast to the studio’s more family-oriented projects.
Technically, the trailer ran at 30 fps in Quality mode on PS5 Pro. Oliver observed ray-traced reflections, such as Wolverine’s reflection lingering in a puddle as the character moved. Alex added that the internal resolution was roughly 1440p in gameplay sequences and about 1512–1600p in cutscenes, suggesting the use of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).
The team hopes the final release will include a 60 fps mode and an updated PSSR by the scheduled launch at the end of 2026. Richard pointed out that the game does not use Unreal Engine 5, and that Insomniac’s technologies and art direction reinforce the title’s more mature orientation.
