It appears that Light of Motiram will not be making its way to a formal release in its current state. The developers have reached a settlement after facing a legal challenge from PlayStation’s legal team.
Ever since Light of Motiram was first unveiled, the gaming community wasted no time in labeling it a “Horizon clone.” Its sprawling vistas, advanced technology, and mechanical beasts bore such a striking resemblance to Guerrilla Games’ iconic franchise that Sony’s intervention seemed inevitable. The situation has now taken a definitive turn.
According to recent court filings, Sony and Tencent have finalized a confidential settlement, leading to the official dismissal of the case with prejudice, meaning it cannot be refiled.
In a concurrent move, Light of Motiram has vanished from both Steam and the Epic Games Store. While the game’s pages were active and accessible just a short while ago, the project has now been scrubbed from these major digital distribution platforms.
This legal battle began in July when Sony sued Tencent, accusing the company of producing a “Horizon copycat.” The lawsuit highlighted similarities in the game’s world-building and visual aesthetic, as well as marketing materials featuring a character who bore a suspicious resemblance to Aloy. Sony argued that these similarities constituted trademark and copyright infringement, likely to cause consumer confusion.
While the specific terms of the agreement remain undisclosed, the result is clear: the game will not reach the market in its current iteration. Both Sony and Tencent have declined to provide official comments on the matter.
