Valve tests personal release calendar on Steam — it works around the clock

Steam will run another experiment with users.

Valve recently introduced a new Steam Labs experiment — participants can opt into the Labs to try a feature that might eventually be integrated into the client.

Experiment No. 16, “Personal Calendar”, analyzes data from Steam profiles to generate a calendar that highlights upcoming game releases:

The calendar locates other players whose playtime profiles resemble yours, then checks which titles those players have added to their wishlists. It prioritizes games you play most frequently (relative to other users) and where you spend the bulk of your time. A few minutes spent in a new title or demo won’t meaningfully influence recommendations, whereas extended playtime in a new favorite will. Updated daily: the recommendation model retrains every day using the latest data. Your suggestions won’t usually shift dramatically from one day to the next, but over time you’ll see new entries — the calendar’s eight-week window advances and developers continue to announce release dates.

One caveat — the calendar does not include weekend release dates:

…very few games release on weekends, and the calendar is designed to maximize space for upcoming launches. In the uncommon event a title does release on a weekend, it will be shown in the calendar cell for the following Monday.
