Valve billionaire Gabe Newell says weekly “uninstall” taunts are just enthusiasm — he still plays Dota 2 every day

“It’s not only the game I love, it’s the people who play it,” he continues. “Sure, folks flame me in chat — about once a week someone throws out a ‘noob, uninstall’ or worse — but I take that as enthusiasm. That energy is part of why, after all these years, I still play Dota every day. Now we’re back in Germany to cheer and celebrate again. [In German] Oh man, this is going to be so much fun.”

“To everyone who’s followed Dota from the beginning, to those who joined later, and to anyone tuning in for the first time — welcome to The International.”

Newell may be investing a multibillion-dollar fortune in boats the size of houses, and his daily gaming habit sounds like the sort of thing a satirical content creator would invent about the wealthy — but some experiences level the playing field. I get flamed online, you probably do too, and so does Gabe Newell. When I’m 62, I hope I still have the reflexes and focus to play a MOBA — though I’d prefer not to be doing it every day.

Valve recently refreshed the Steam client with long-requested improvements such as UI scaling and other quality-of-life changes — a welcome update from users who’ve been asking for it.
