Epic Games is preparing a major technological overhaul intended to open extensive possibilities for both seasoned creators and newcomers building their own games.
Since the era of Unreal Engine 4, the company has pursued simplified workflows and broader access to tools for aspiring developers working on their first Unreal projects. The launch of Fortnite’s Creative mode — along with its dedicated engine variant, UEFN — marked a significant milestone for Epic.
Epic’s CEO, Tim Sweeney, said even more ambitious changes are planned. He indicated that in roughly two and a half years, around 2028, audiences can expect the first reveal of Unreal Engine 6. The new engine is being positioned for the next generation of hardware — PlayStation 6, Xbox Prime, Nintendo Switch 2 and future models. Few specifics were shared beyond a mention that UE5’s features and the UEFN ecosystem will be unified.
At Unreal Fest Japan, Sweeney commented: “Over the next two and a half years the strongest elements of UE5 and the Fortnite ecosystem will be combined, resulting in the emergence of UE6.”
