Indie rock stalwarts Death Cab for Cutie have officially signaled their return. On Monday, March 16, the band announced their upcoming studio album, I Built You a Tower, alongside the release of a haunting new lead single titled “Riptides.”

The quintet—comprised of Ben Gibbard, Nicholas Harmer, Jason McGerr, Dave Depper, and Zac Rae—is slated to release the new LP on June 5 via ANTI- Records. This marks their first full-length effort since 2022’s Asphalt Meadows. The debut track, “Riptides,” serves as a poignant exploration of the intersection between private turmoil and the overwhelming scale of collective global tragedy.

“It’s about the challenge of navigating personal struggles while the world around us endures loss on an unfathomable scale,” frontman Ben Gibbard shared in a press release. “When those two elements intertwine within our psyche, the result can feel utterly paralyzing.”

The accompanying music video for “Riptides” features the band performing amidst a vivid, atmospheric light show. Deep purples and cool blues cast long shadows over the musicians, mirroring the contemplative and moody aesthetic that defines I Built You a Tower.

The record was born from a period of intense pressure for Gibbard. Throughout 2023, he balanced the monumental task of fronting both Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service for a massive co-headlining anniversary tour. According to the band, the songwriting process served as a vessel for Gibbard to process a sense of personal “collapse” and the persistent nature of trauma.

“There is a human necessity to find a sanctuary for our grief—a place where it can be contained so we can continue living,” Gibbard explained. “But there are inevitably moments where that trauma ruptures the shell we’ve built for it.”

Death Cab for Cutie remains a formidable force on the charts; their previous release reached No. 60 on the Billboard 200, adding to a career that includes ten chart entries and the No. 1 peak of 2008’s Narrow Stairs.

Following the album’s release this June, the band will embark on an extensive international tour beginning in May. They will be joined by a stellar rotation of supporting acts, including Japanese Breakfast, Jay Som, Nation of Language, and Lala Lala.
