Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan Release Remix and Video Starring David Byrne

Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan released a joint version and music video for “Expectations” on Thursday, Oct. 15. The track is a remix of a song from Rodrigo’s Billboard 200-topping third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.

The 1980s-style synth-pop anthem sets high standards in dating, and Roan’s appearance on the update adds a second voice. Past mistakes serve as new information, the Grammy winners sing, adding that they have expectations.

Rodrigo shared a teaser hours before the video release that showed a campy game-show theme where the singers compete on “The Big Expectations Show” in retro-chic outfits. Roan says sarcastically in the clip that Olivia does remixes now. The video includes multiple retro game shows, such as a Family Feud spoof named Sister Squabble where Rodrigo and Roan compete against their families. Talking Heads frontman David Byrne hosts the shows as a fictional emcee named Johnny Johnson.

Roan contributes an entirely new verse to the song with lyrics directed at an unimpressive female suitor instead of the underwhelming men Rodrigo addresses.

“Expectations” is a rare collaboration for Rodrigo and the first for Roan, who has never previously appeared on another artist’s track or hosted a guest on her own album. Rodrigo’s only prior official release duet was with Robert Smith on “What’s Wrong With Me” from You Seem Pretty Sad.

The remix follows years of friendship between the artists, who both collaborate with producer Dan Nigro. Roan opened for Rodrigo on the Sour Tour and Guts World Tour. After Roan achieved wider stardom during the Guts run, she returned to the stage to perform “Hot to Go!” with Rodrigo.

The duo reunited in August at Daisy Chain Fields, a festival Rodrigo founded this year to raise funds for charities supporting women and girls. Roan praised Rodrigo on Instagram after her set, writing that Rodrigo uses her platform for good, supports artists like her, and has changed her life.
