Fans of late‑90s classic shooters now have a reason to return to the planet Na Pali. Modder mstewart401 released UnrealRTX on ModDB — a full remaster of Unreal’s 1998 campaign rebuilt using NVIDIA RTX Remix technology.
There’s no multiplayer, but the game’s presentation has been thoroughly transformed: ray tracing, global illumination, dynamic shadows, volumetric light effects, and realistic light sources that respond to the environment have been added. The author notes that every location feels deeper and more atmospheric while the original level layouts remain intact. UnrealRTX uses PBR (Physically Based Rendering) materials, allowing surfaces to reflect light realistically based on metallicity, roughness, and subsurface scattering. Some models and geometry were replaced to improve detail.
Most textures were restored with RTX Remix’s AI tools, and vegetation was generated using NVIDIA Omniverse. Via the UnrealED editor, the modder placed placeholder objects that were later converted into grass and added new light sources where none existed before.
About 90% of the height maps and nearly all emissive maps were hand‑painted — in MS Paint. The mod’s size reaches 48.29 GB, but the author plans future optimizations by lowering resolutions and reducing 8K roughness maps.
