Universal Pictures has officially stepped away from Soulm8te, the latest project from the visionaries responsible for M3GAN. According to a report by Variety, the studio will no longer be moving forward with the film’s distribution.
The project, an erotic horror-thriller, was initially announced in the summer of 2024 with a tentative release window set for January 2026. The narrative follows a grieving widower who acquires a sophisticated android to serve as a companion and surrogate for his late wife. However, the machine’s devotion soon spirals into a lethal obsession, turning a harmless helper into a deadly predator.
Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother) was tapped to direct, working from a screenplay penned by Rafael Jordan. Horror maestro James Wan and his production company, Atomic Monster, were attached to produce. Following Universal’s departure, the production is currently seeking a new home and distribution partner.
The original M3GAN became a breakout sensation upon its debut in early 2023. However, its 2025 sequel failed to capture the same lightning in a bottle, underperforming significantly at the box office and facing a cold reception from critics.
