Obsidian Entertainment is preparing to launch The Outer Worlds 2. The title is slated for release on October 29, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. In a recent interview, director Brandon Adler explained what the team learned from the original game and how those lessons informed the sequel. The bottom line — players wanted more.
But “more” isn’t merely about larger maps. Adler said the studio conducted research to determine how to improve the experience: add richer content, lengthen playtime, and polish core systems.
“Players loved our universe and wanted to spend more time in it. We heard requests like, ‘Give us more zones, more quests — let us linger in this setting.’ That clear demand became a guiding goal for the team.”
The Outer Worlds 2 will feel significantly more responsive. Both the world and its characters will react more distinctly to player choices and to the specifics of each character build.
“It was essential for us to refine not only character creation but also progression — skills, traits, and flaws. Players will be able to combine these elements and shape a personalized role-playing style.”
Creative director Leonard Boyarsky stressed that the sequel removes some of the constraints present in the first game. In this installment, decisions won’t accidentally block access to large portions of content.
“In the first game we faced limits — we couldn’t let player choices cut off roughly 10% of the content. Now we have the latitude to expand the scope and return to the deep RPG systems fans have been asking for.”
