Obsidian Returns With The Outer Worlds 2 — A Sharper Satire of Corporate Power
The original Outer Worlds (2019) stood out for its sharp, often sardonic writing that skewered the excesses of market-driven societies and the people who steer them. The Outer Worlds 2 amplifies that voice: a newly risen triumvirate vies for control of Arcadia, and your Earth Directorate protagonist is tugged into the conflict.
The game released on October 29, 2025, with select early access offered to Premium Edition purchasers. Ahead of launch, we spoke with Obsidian Entertainment about how the studio returned to its recurring themes—power, greed, and the consequence of economic systems—and whether real-world events shaped the sequel’s tone.
Timeless Themes, Not a Hot-Take
Creative director Leonard Boyarsky explained that the studio deliberately avoids tying the game too closely to any single contemporary event. Obsidian aims for themes that persist across eras—how those with authority often exploit those without it—so the story remains resonant rather than quickly dated. As Boyarsky quipped about modern inequalities, “I’m shocked.”
The team also noted that Obsidian’s acquisition by Microsoft and integration into Xbox Game Studios did not reshape the sequel’s message. Instead, narrative choices—like the consolidation of two corporate powers into one—were driven by internal design decisions early in development.
A New Power Dynamic on Arcadia
In The Outer Worlds 2, Spacer’s Choice and Auntie Cleo’s have been combined into a single entity called Auntie’s Choice, which now represents the merchant element of the planet’s ruling triad. The other two pillars of power are the monarchy (the Protectorate) and the religious Order of the Ascendant. According to Boyarsky, the merger felt like the natural narrative path and was proposed early on by two narrative designers who contributed to the franchise’s first entry.
Game director Brandon Adler and the team encourage players to judge for themselves how Auntie’s Choice will behave within this uneasy balance of commerce, crown, and creed when they explore Arcadia.
