The first look at the Riverdale-Sabrina crossover event is absolutely bananas

Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina Spellman in Riverdale’s sixth season

The CW

At this point, it’s impossible for Riverdale to out Riverdale itself, but the first promo for The CW drama’s sixth season comes close. The new season of Riverdale kicks off on Tuesday, Nov. 16 with a five-episode event that will feature the anticipated Chilling Adventures of Sabrina crossover. In the event, dubbed “Rivervale,” Kiernan Shipka will reprise her role as Sabrina Spellman, nearly one year after CAOS wrapped its four-season run on Netflix.

Official details about “Rivervale” remain scarce, but what’s clear is that this arc is going to be absolutely wild. It appears that after Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) discovered her ancestor was burned at the stake, she’s taken up a new hobby: leading a coven. In the trailer, a very decked out Cheryl oversees a group of young women clutching voodoo dolls as she ominously instructs, “We must return to the old ways.” But that isn’t even the wildest part of the trailer: There’s also a man who claims to be the devil, some seriously supernatural looking ghouls, and Betty (Lili Reinhart) declaring that there’s nothing more she wants than to have a baby with Archie (KJ Apa).

Compared to all of that, a (seemingly) resurrected witch showing up in town seems almost quaint.

Unfortunately, we only get a hint of Sabrina’s appearance in Riverdale at the very end of the teaser. “Look what the black cat dragged in,” a smiling Cheryl says upon seeing Sabrina, who seems equally excited to see the cheerleader-turned-gang leader-turned apparent coven leader. According to E!, ‘Brina first appears in the fourth episode, “The Witching Hour,” where Cheryl will attempt a spell “that may mean the difference between life and death for a beloved member of the Blossom family.” As someone who is both an expert in magic and dying, we can’t imagine a better person than Sabrina to be on-hand for Cheryl’s risky endeavor.

Riverdale returns Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 9/8c on The CW.
