Hideo Kojima is widely recognized as a visionary who consistently defies the conventions of traditional AAA titles and ignores established genre blueprints. Despite a career spanning nearly four decades, his creative well remains deeper than ever.
In a recent feature on WIRED’s YouTube channel, Kojima sat down to answer a series of questions from the gaming community. When discussing his approach to future projects, the legendary creator noted:
“I aim to be a pioneer of entirely new genres, which is why I don’t focus too heavily on those that already exist.”
He also touched upon the potential settings for his upcoming work:
“As for the setting, it might very well be science fiction. I have a great love for stories set in outer space and would like to try my hand at it.”
He further elaborated:
“I’m also a huge admirer of Westerns, so perhaps something in that style. Or maybe a period piece—though those already exist in many forms. So, I am still contemplating which direction to take next.”
Kojima delved into the subject of genre evolution around the six-minute mark of the interview. His historical repertoire has frequently served as a catalyst for new gaming trends: from standardizing the stealth genre with Metal Gear to the experimental ‘strand’ mechanics of Death Stranding.
Currently, Kojima Productions is hard at work on the horror project OD and the high-concept espionage title Physint. Given his recent comments, it is entirely possible that Kojima’s next venture will take players deep into the cosmos or across the rugged frontiers of the Old West.
