Larian Studios reached unprecedented heights with the release of Baldur’s Gate 3—a single-player phenomenon that continues to pull in over 70,000 peak concurrent players on Steam daily, even two years after its debut. This title has catapulted the studio into the global spotlight, eclipsing the achievements of their earlier catalog.
While Divinity: Original Sin 2 remains a critically acclaimed RPG, its commercial footprint is modest compared to the juggernaut that is Baldur’s Gate 3. As a result, the majority of Larian’s modern audience identifies primarily as BG3 fans rather than Divinity devotees. In a recent interview, studio head Swen Vincke suggested that players who fell in love with BG3’s cinematic storytelling might find the older Divinity titles a bit jarring, unless their primary goal is to explore the franchise’s extensive lore.
If your enjoyment of Baldur’s Gate 3 was driven by its tactical co-op combat, player agency, or multiplayer experience, then Original Sin 2 is definitely worth your time. It truly served as the mechanical foundation for BG3. The first Original Sin is also an option, though perhaps less so, as it lacks the complex companion systems found in the subsequent titles.
Vincke added that the studio’s earlier games have begun to show their age and might disappoint those expecting the same level of character depth seen in BG3. Nevertheless, the history of all previous entries will be respected in the next Divinity project, even as the team continues to build upon the legacy of the Original Sin series.
