Super Mario 64 Speedrunner Sets 1-Star World Record Using a Drum Kit

Super Mario 64 World Record Drum Kit

Just three weeks after blindfolded speedrunning expert Bubzia unveiled a revolutionary Super Mario 64 exploit—one he claimed would alter the game’s meta indefinitely—a staggering new world record has proven him right.

The trick in question is known as the “crackslide.” This maneuver effectively trivializes a notoriously difficult sequence that was previously a major hurdle in the 1-star speedrunning category—a challenge where players must complete the game while collecting only a single star.

Pushing this discovery to its absolute limit, percussion-based speedrunner CZR has now claimed a unique world record: the first-ever 1-star completion of Super Mario 64 performed entirely on a drum kit. CZR credits the “crackslide” strategy as the key factor that made this rhythmic run possible.

The control scheme for this feat is impressively complex. CZR mapped the drum heads to function as an analog stick, allowing him to dictate Mario’s movement through percussion. Meanwhile, the outer rims of the drums are assigned to the C-buttons. The intensity of each strike also plays a role, meaning CZR has to balance physical power with surgical precision to navigate the game’s hazards.

You can witness the entire journey, from the gates of Peach’s Castle to the final confrontation with Bowser, in the video above. At just over 10 minutes long, it is a masterclass in creative gameplay, punctuated by CZR’s well-earned celebration at the finish line.

In other modding news, Super Mario 64 has recently been ported to the PS1, proving that for this community, the best reason to do something is simply because it can be done.
