On the Nintendo 64 side, Carl employed a similar strategy using a custom cartridge he’d previously engineered, which also features an integrated Pico. He essentially injected a secondary Mario instance into each system’s game state, then synced the extra character’s positional data across both platforms in real-time.

While that sounds simple in principle, Carl’s video reveals the grueling troubleshooting required to align the two systems. One standout challenge was the frame rate variance between the N64 and PS2, which initially caused animations to drift out of sync—a fascinating hurdle reflecting the generational gap between the consoles.

Remarkably, the improvised project is a complete success. Carl himself admitted that “it works much better than I thought it was going to.” The result is a fully functional co-op mod with stable crossplay between hardware released years before online gaming became a standard. It’s a perfect tribute to the ingenuity of modders—creating something complex, unnecessary, and absolutely brilliant.
