McMillen elaborated, “It’s entirely inspired by The Simpsons, and the couch gag was the core reason—I wanted the outcome to be unique every time.” He went on to confirm that there are approximately 200 different couch gag iterations embedded in the code.

Watch On

The opening of Mewgenics begins with the gravestones of McMillen and co-creator Tyler Glaiel. Depending on your luck, these stones can change in size or shape, and even feature crude graffiti—I first clued into the gimmick when I noticed the word “FAT” scrawled across Edmund’s tombstone. The sequence concludes with Dr. Beansies experimenting on a cat that might appear multi-headed, skeletal, vibrant red, or any number of bizarre mutations.

McMillen admitted that Glaiel was initially skeptical of the effort, arguing that “nobody is going to notice, and they won’t watch it more than once.” Technically, he was right. However, McMillen doubled down on the detail, randomizing everything from foreground elements to background NPCs. Looking back, I feel slightly foolish for not immediately recognizing the homage to one of television’s most iconic series, especially in a game that will surely be my top pick for 2026.
