The acclaimed developers at Unknown Worlds Entertainment have announced that the definitive versions of Subnautica and its chilling sequel, Subnautica: Below Zero, are set to dive onto the Nintendo Switch 2 on February 17. These upgraded editions promise to revitalize the deep-sea survival experience, delivering crisp resolutions and silky-smooth frame rates alongside optimizations specifically tailored for the new Joy-Con 2 controllers.
In a move that rewards loyal fans, players who already own these titles on the original Nintendo Switch can claim a free upgrade to the Switch 2 versions via the Nintendo eShop. Technical enhancements are substantial: when docked, explorers can plunge into the depths at a sharp 1440p resolution, while handheld play now supports a native 1080p. Both modes target a fluid 60 FPS, ensuring that the alien aquatic landscapes look and feel more immersive than ever. Furthermore, the refined Joy-Con 2 support allows for more precise navigation and tactile interaction within the game’s dangerous environments.
“The magic of Subnautica has always been rooted in its community—the shared stories of discovery and the collective sense of awe found in exploring the unknown,” noted Michael Varette, producer at Unknown Worlds, in a recent statement. “Bringing these titles to the Nintendo Switch 2 is our way of welcoming a new generation of divers into the fold while offering our long-term fans a fresh, more immersive way to experience Planet 4546B.”
Beyond these upcoming re-releases, the studio continues to look toward the future. Unknown Worlds recently premiered their fifth developer vlog for the highly anticipated Subnautica 2, highlighting the series’ evolution into multiplayer territory.
