Square Enix Announces Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined — Classic JRPG Remake Coming to Consoles and PC in February 2026

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined — protagonist on a boat

Dragon Quest VII is the latest mainline JRPG set to be remade. Titled Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, this “handcrafted” reinterpretation of the PS1 original was unveiled during Nintendo’s September Direct. The release is scheduled for February 5, 2026 on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Originally released in 2000 (2001 outside Japan), Dragon Quest VII follows a protagonist as they explore the Estard Islands. Upon launch the game earned praise from critics and players for its expansive scope. Its combat and vocation systems adhered to classic Dragon Quest conventions, while exploration was expanded through collectible “stone shards,” separate large regions, and multiple traversal mechanics.

Dragon Quest VII first arrived under Enix before the company merged; this reimagined edition returns the title to Square Enix’s catalogue.
