Canada Officially Joins the Eurovision Song Contest Family

In a surprising turn of events, Canada is trading North American territory for a spot on the European stage. The Eurovision Song Contest committee confirmed on Wednesday, July 1, that Canada has been formally invited to participate in the upcoming 2027 competition.
The announcement arrived on Canada Day, signaling a historic shift for the beloved, high-energy spectacle. While the contest remains geographically anchored in Europe, Canada’s inclusion marks a significant expansion of the event’s reach, following in the footsteps of Australia, which made its debut in 2015.
This development follows a June 25 vote at the 96th general assembly in Prague, where CBC/Radio-Canada secured full membership within the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). “Happy Canada Day! Canada will make its Eurovision debut in Bulgaria next year,” the organization shared via social media, highlighting the significance of this milestone.
CBC/Radio-Canada president Marie-Philippe Bouchard expressed her enthusiasm regarding the opportunity: “We are thrilled to bring the world’s most iconic live music event to Canadians. This allows our homegrown talent to shine on a truly global stage, while fans back home get the unique experience of seeing their own nation represented in the competition.”
The Eurovision Song Contest is famed for its theatrical flair, diverse musical styles, and dramatic performances. Canada’s link to the event runs deep; most notably, Quebec’s own Céline Dion secured a victory for Switzerland in 1988 with her evocative performance of “Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi.” She remains the only Canadian artist to claim the Eurovision title to date.
Beyond the music, the numbers justify the move. During this year’s contest in Vienna, Canada emerged as a powerhouse in the “Rest of the World” fan vote and ranked among the top international countries for ticket purchases. EBU Director Martin Green welcomed the news, stating, “While the contest was born in Europe, it continues to evolve and embrace the world. We look forward to seeing Canada’s creativity and energy light up the stage in Bulgaria.”
The 71st Eurovision Song Contest will head to Bulgaria in 2027, hosted in the wake of singer DARA’s recent victory with her infectious disco anthem, “Bangaranga.”
