About this game
The black mass of water presses against the helmet glass. An alarm rips through the silence: oxygen reserves are critically low. Subnautica 2 ruthlessly shatters the illusion of a safe ocean. The starting shallows only lull your alertness before the real ordeal. A single step beyond the light means descending into the absolute darkness of an alien planet, where humans are nothing more than prey.
Choosing to download Subnautica 2 on PC opens the door to an uncompromising underwater survival simulator. There are no quest markers and no rescue checkpoints. Every dive into a cave system risks disorientation and a slow death from suffocation. The new cooperative mode for up to four players multiplies the tension: one player’s panic inevitably drags the entire expedition down. The cost of a mistake here is at its highest from the very first minutes of the dive.
What’s worth knowing before you dive in:
- Four-player co-op — a shared world, a shared inventory next to lockers, synchronized base building. Progression doesn’t require partners; the mode is opt-in.
- The Tadpole submarine — a compact two-seater: the pilot sits inside, the passenger rides outside on an external port with an oxygen supply. Chassis options are available for mining, transport, and a mobile base.
- Procedural base — modules are placed freely, without a rigid grid. You can run power lines, expand compartments, set up decorative areas, and share resources and construction with teammates.
- DNA modification system — scanning local fauna unlocks passive and active mods: night vision from bioluminescent species, pressure resistance, speed boosts. Progression comes from studying the ecosystem, not only from crafting.
- Ocean currents — a new navigation mechanic that can drag a diver into a deeper biome ahead of schedule. It affects both free swimming and the behavior of the Tadpole.
- Leviathans and predators — the Collector Leviathan on the Sparse Plains can’t be ignored solo or in a group. A separate layer of tension is built around these encounters, in the classic style of the series.
Trailer:
Before downloading, it’s worth checking the system requirements — the latest version of Subnautica 2 on UE5 is noticeably more demanding than the original, especially in co-op with an active base and vehicles. This is still early access: content will be added gradually, and some of the planned biomes, Leviathans, and vehicles will appear in later patches.

Reviews
Subnautica 2 is like Subnautica 1 but if Subnautica 1 was a cheese pizza and you finally added all the toppings. Both are objectively good but Subnautica 2 also gave you double bacon and cheese for free.
TL; DR Played for 90 hours (Had super early access), Loved it for 90 hours. Will play it much more for years to come. This is the best version of Subnautica anyone could ever experience in Early Access. Honestly, It’s probably the best Early Access release you could ask for of any game thus far.
Very good but not finished yet. Finished the story (so far) in about 15 hours, got another few hours out of exploring anything I’d missed, reading data logs and base building.
Several biomes, 4 distinct zones, two real hostile leviathans, no large submersible yet. Had plenty of fun with base building and exploring regardless.
11 hours in and I’m still not done, I’ve heard people calling the game “hand-holdy” but from start to finish I was freely exploring and found most wrecks and resources completely on my own, this is improved Subnautica with a couple subtle changes.
Obviously though, it’s not mind-shatteringly incredible. It does have that early access feel and while you can get lost in it, the world is much smaller and more linear than Below Zero and Subnautica 1. I myself haven’t gone deeper than 450m 10 hours in and don’t really expect to go much further than that. Temper your expectations. But what is here is still awesome, from what I’ve already seen (not done yet) story-wise and gameplay-wise, my expectations for the final product Unknown Worlds envisions has been set very high.
Graphics are better (duh). Sound Design, OST and Immersion are on par if not already better than Subnautica 1.
It is a good game! While it is not better than the first Subnautica yet, it definitely has the potential to be once early access finishes. I was a bit disappointed by how short the current story is (around 12 hours of playtime, maybe less), but I still had a great time completing it.
I really hope the developers release new content quickly because I can’t wait to see the full story. I would recommend waiting until full release before buying, but at the end of the day, it is your decision. Personally, I had a blast and totally recommend giving it a try!
Great first instance of this game and even if you haven’t played the earlier games in this series, it’s easy to jump in with this game, plus they improved or fixed nearly every quality of life issue from the previous two.
Don’t go in expecting a full game yet but Unknown Worlds is probably the most community-focused developer in the world and they will undoubtedly continue to support the game with great content (and system) fixes and updates for several years to come.
They didn’t seem to let some industry bullying slow their creative motivation down at all and as a fan, I’m grateful to play whatever they make with love and Subnautica 2 is their penultimate, creatives-focused open-world with wonder, terror, and artistic freedom at its core.
