About this game
The penal colony of Khorinis is once again living under the magic barrier. The spell was supposed to contain the prisoners mining magic ore for King Rhobar II, but control quickly passed to the convicts themselves. The Old Camp controls the trade and guards the mines, the New Camp searches for a way to freedom, and the Swamp Sect worships the Sleeper. A nameless hero is thrown past the barrier without a name, weapons, or allies.
Gothic 1 Remake preserves the core of the cult 2001 RPG, but rebuilds it on a modern technical foundation. The remake updates the combat system, expands quests, adds NPC reactions and new ways to traverse the world. The locations remain recognizable: mines, forest trails, swamp huts, arenas, camp gates, and places where it’s too early to go without preparation.
- A Living Penal Colony — camp residents work, sleep, eat, guard passages, and react to the hero’s behavior. The NPCs’ routines help you understand where to find a mentor, when to reach the right person, and why it’s better not to wander into other people’s corners at night.
- Three Factions With Different Interests — The “Old Camp” runs on the guards’ power and ore trading, the “New Camp” is building its own escape plan, and the swamp sect believes in the “Sleeper.” Choosing a side affects training, equipment, access to characters, and the rest of your playthrough.
- Combat System With Weapon Weight — fights require distance, timing, and an understanding of the opponent. A weak hero at the beginning doesn’t turn into a master after a couple of hits, so training, new weapons, and armor genuinely change the feel of combat.
- Exploration Without Hand-Holding — the paths between camps are open early on, but freedom doesn’t cancel out the danger. Behind a familiar road could be a stash, a detour, a quest character, or a beast that’s better avoided until you’re properly prepared.
- Expanded Quests — the remake refines quest chains related to ore, debts, guarding, food, weapons, and internal camp conflicts. Side quests don’t feel like separate checklists, because almost every task is tied to the daily life of the colony.
- Growth Through Mentors — skills are unlocked by specific characters, not a faceless leveling menu. Proficiency with a sword, magic, bow, and crafting becomes part of the local hierarchy: first the hero asks for help, then gains access to people who previously wouldn’t even talk to him.
