Sony to Release More Live-Service Games Than Story-Driven Exclusives in 2026

The current trajectory is unlikely to shift, even if the controversial Fairgame$ is eventually scrapped.

Over the past several years, Sony has aggressively pivoted toward a live-service strategy. Although the high-profile collapse of Concord forced the company to reassess its immediate tactics, the Japanese giant remains committed to the vision, continuing to pour substantial investment into ongoing service-based projects.

According to confirmed reports, Sony Interactive Entertainment is set to release more live-service titles for the PlayStation 5 in 2026 than traditional single-player games. Currently, only two narrative-driven projects are slated for the coming year: Marvel’s Wolverine and Saros. The remainder of the release calendar is populated by live-service initiatives:

  • Marathon (from Bungie)
  • Marvel Tōkon
  • MLB The Show 26
  • Fairgame$ (assuming it survives development)

Atmospheric, single-player epics have long been the bedrock of the PlayStation ecosystem—these are the titles that truly set the platform apart. Cinematic franchises like Uncharted, The Last of Us, and God of War earned massive critical acclaim and served as the primary drivers for console adoption. It appears Sony may be weary of maintaining this unique market position, perhaps seeking to avoid the escalating financial risks associated with producing bespoke, high-budget narrative experiences.
