Skyrim Lead Suggests George R.R. Martin Should Let HBO’s Ending Stand and Move On to New Projects

Game of Thrones

Devoted readers have been anticipating the penultimate volume, The Winds of Winter, for nearly fifteen years. Now 77, Martin has become increasingly transparent about the difficulties he faces in rounding out the series, which is slated to conclude with A Dream of Spring. While the HBO series was a cultural phenomenon, its final seasons were famously divisive, largely because the showrunners surpassed the existing source material and had to forge their own path. Suggesting that HBO did an “amazing job” with the finale is a perspective many hardcore fans might contest.

One could argue that the controversial nature of the show’s ending is the ultimate motivation for Martin to finish his books. It remains his only opportunity to provide the definitive, intended resolution to a series that has otherwise been a masterpiece of modern high fantasy. For Martin, completing the books would be the final word against the critics of the television adaptation—a way to say, “This is the true story.”

Nesmith, however, finds peace in having completed his own series, though he joked about the allure of a major production deal. “I have no desire to follow George’s path—unless, of course, someone offers me a massive HBO contract. In that case, I’d be more than happy to let David Benioff finish the job for me.”

In related news, Game of Thrones enthusiasts are celebrating the upcoming “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” for finally capturing the specific aesthetic details found in George R.R. Martin’s original novellas.
