Sega-licensed NFT game development suspended due to Web3 market changes

The prospects for Code of Jokers Evolutions returning to active development appear slim.

Developer Jokers, a studio established by former Sega veterans, has officially announced the termination of Code of Jokers Evolutions. This mobile blockchain title was being developed under an official license from Sega.

First unveiled in March 2025, the project was envisioned as a digital card game rooted in Sega’s Code of Joker arcade intellectual property. The original arcade series enjoyed a run from 2013 to 2019. Sega previously attempted to bring the franchise to mobile devices in 2017 with Code of Jokers Pocket, though the service was discontinued just one year later.

Code of Jokers Evolutions was positioned as a major revival, retaining the core mechanics of its predecessor while introducing modern features like blockchain-based card trading between players. The studio had initially planned a global rollout for 2025, with a Japanese launch set for late 2026. However, in a recent statement, Developer Jokers confirmed they have decided to scrap the project, citing “shifting dynamics within the Web3 gaming market” as the primary reason for the cancellation.
