The development team has rolled out a suite of tools designed to safeguard player progress and ensure the adventure continues even when encountering game-breaking glitches.
Update 1.05 for Of Ash and Steel has officially arrived, with a primary focus on addressing critical stability issues. To empower the community, the developers have introduced “authorized cheats”—essentially a set of dedicated debug commands that players can use to fix broken states.
Upon launching version 1.05, the game will automatically generate a backup of your existing save files as a safety precaution. When loading a save created in any version prior to 1.05, the following processes will trigger:
- A recovery script will run in the background to identify and restore any missing quest-essential items.
- The game will perform an automatic save to migrate your progress to the 1.05 logic. All subsequent saves during that session will utilize the updated loading system.
On the initial load in version 1.05, the recovery script will attempt to restore any quest items that have vanished from the world. It does this by auditing your inventory and checking specific progress indicators, such as the start or completion status of quests.
If the automated script fails to resolve the issue, the developers suggest manually utilizing the “spawnitem” debug command.
This primarily concerns players loading version 1.04 saves where items had already disappeared. According to the studio, new playthroughs started on version 1.05 should not experience these item-loss issues.
Additionally, specific debug commands can now be used to resurrect essential story NPCs if they were accidentally killed prematurely.

Other notable changes in this update:
Time-skipping stations have been added to key locations. While these allow you to fast-forward the clock, they do not restore health or fatigue, and using them will slightly increase your character’s hunger and thirst:
The vendor “buyback” button is now highlighted with a distinct color and displays the items available for purchase at the top of the interface.
A detailed physical map stand has been integrated into the city to assist with navigation.
