There is a growing concern that enthusiasm for Grand Theft Auto VI may begin to wane if the wait for its release remains indefinite.
Mike York, a former animator at Rockstar Games, recently shared his perspective during an interview with Esports Insider. He offered professional insights into the current development status of Grand Theft Auto VI and the likelihood of further scheduling adjustments:
Knowing the culture at Rockstar Games—and I still have many contacts there—one of the main reasons for the wait is their commitment to absolute quality. They are focused on polishing every minor detail. Given the massive expectations and what is at stake for the franchise, I don’t believe the game is fully finished yet.
Mike York suggests that the project is on track for its next milestone, predicting a launch in late 2026:
I anticipate a November 2026 release, as it aligns perfectly with Rockstar’s historical release strategy for several reasons […] To achieve record-breaking sales, the ideal window for GTA VI is roughly a month before the holiday season. Typically, studios only delay major projects once or twice when absolutely necessary, so I believe this timeline is a realistic expectation.
In York’s view, any further delays beyond that point could risk extinguishing the unprecedented momentum the game currently enjoys:
If Rockstar Games chooses to postpone the release of GTA VI once more, they risk losing the immense hype built up around the project. Currently, there is a lull in public discourse because there simply isn’t any new information. We are reaching a point where an overly extended wait could shift from anticipation to frustration for many fans.
