Edmund McMillen, the visionary developer responsible for indie staples like The Binding of Isaac and Super Meat Boy, has offered a deeper look into the mechanical DNA of his upcoming tactical project, Mewgenics.
During a guest appearance on the Windbreaker Podcast, McMillen was invited to pitch the concept of his feline-centric strategy game. He opened the discussion with his signature irreverent humor, clarifying that while the game revolves around breeding cats, it steers clear of graphic anatomical details. “There are no penises; I never drew one,” he joked, though he cheekily added that players might encounter “a penis or two” elsewhere, just not on the breeding felines.
When asked about his creative influences, McMillen pointed primarily toward tabletop experiences, citing Magic: The Gathering as his biggest inspiration. “It might seem abstract because people will just see a turn-based game with cats breeding, but the core is very much Magic: The Gathering,” McMillen noted. He described his design approach as “doing my best Richard Garfield,” where individual cats function like unique cards, allowing players to find game-breaking combos or specialize in aggressive and defensive playstyles.
The developer also revealed an eclectic cast of voice talent for the project. Fans can expect cameos from podcast hosts Packard and Yahtzee Croshaw, alongside Stranger Things star David Harbour, who is a documented Binding of Isaac enthusiast. The cast further includes horror icon Barbara Crampton and Gene Ween, the frontman of the band Ween, both of whom joined the project because their children are avid fans of McMillen’s work. McMillen teased one final, massive cameo that he “won’t spill the beans” on—a pun that has led many to speculate about an appearance by Rowan Atkinson.
Binding of Isaac creator Edmund McMillen previously mentioned that he originally developed the iconic roguelike as a small experiment to test the waters before diving into what he considers his true magnum opus.
