Ubisoft developer Anthony Armstrong reached out to Rockstar Games on LinkedIn about setting up a GTA 6 playtest for his family member who has been battling cancer for years and just given 6-12 months to live. A later update to the post indicated that Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick personally intervened to connect the family with the Rockstar team. A final update brought more positive news: “We spoke with them today and received wonderful news. That is all I can disclose for now, but I am profoundly grateful to everyone.” It is likely the post was removed to comply with standard non-disclosure agreements, given Rockstar’s reputation for extreme secrecy.
Despite its private nature, the industry behemoth is known for acts of compassion. Years ago, Rockstar made a similar gesture by allowing another terminally ill fan to play Red Dead Redemption 2 ahead of its launch. This has become an uplifting trend within the gaming world; just last year, Gearbox Software arranged for a fan with cancer to play Borderlands 4 ahead of schedule.
