Resident Evil Requiem Wasn’t Initially Planned for Switch 2 — RE Village’s Strong Performance on Nintendo’s New Console Convinced Capcom

Few expected Resident Evil Requiem (RE9) to hit Nintendo Switch 2 the same day as other platforms — February 27, 2026 — and apparently Capcom didn’t either: the Switch 2 release “wasn’t in the original plan.”

Speaking to IGN at Tokyo Game Show 2025, series producer Masato Kumazawa explained that Nintendo hadn’t officially unveiled its new console-handheld hybrid when Capcom first began work on the next Resident Evil title, “so of course it wasn’t in the original plan.”

Once the Switch 2 was announced, the team started testing and developing on the hardware. They initially tried Resident Evil Village on the device, and the results impressed them so much that Capcom decided to expand support to more entries in the series.

“Seeing how well it ran gave us the confidence to add a Switch 2 version of Requiem to our roadmap,” Kumazawa said, adding that this decision led to the announcement confirming Requiem — along with Resident Evil 7 and 8 — would also be released on Nintendo Switch 2 at the same time.

Director Koshi Nakanishi has also noted that Resident Evil 7 could be too intense for some players, which is why Requiem offers both first- and third-person modes “to make it slightly easier to deal with.”

Capcom says Requiem will present an “updated” Raccoon City that highlights the scale of its destruction while preserving a few of the franchise’s most recognisable locations.
