Moving forward, Obsidian’s leadership—including Justin Britch and Marcus Morgan, who are poised to lead after Urquhart’s eventual retirement—suggests a more sustainable path. During a DICE presentation, they argued that the studio’s longevity depends on employee retention and aiming for consistent, reliable hits rather than unsustainable “blockbuster-or-bust” growth.

“You need to keep having at-bats,” Morgan explained. “If you can consistently deliver quality content, eventually you’ll land those breakout successes.”

As Microsoft reportedly pushes for higher profit margins across its Xbox ecosystem, Obsidian remains hopeful that its smaller, creatively distinct projects like Pentiment will continue to receive the green light. While these games may not always hit the aggressive 30% profitability targets Microsoft expects, they provide essential value to the platform’s portfolio.

For now, the studio is juggling multiple projects, including continued support for Grounded 2 and new explorations in the Pillars of Eternity and Avowed universes. While The Outer Worlds 3 isn’t currently in development, Obsidian is carefully monitoring the reception of its latest titles to guide its future trajectory—even considering community requests, like a more elaborate crime system for Avowed.

“Our objective is to build games that people genuinely want to buy and experience,” Urquhart concluded. “As long as we achieve that, we have a very solid foundation.”

Obsidian’s history is filled with some of the finest RPGs ever made.
