This news serves as a frustrating blow for fans who had been looking forward to playing the looter-shooter on the go. It stands in sharp contrast to the enthusiasm shown in July by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who famously hyped the Switch 2 release from a literal throne, calling Nintendo’s new machine a “fantastic platform.” At the time, an October launch seemed certain; now, it appears to be dead in the water.
“Our current priority is ensuring high-quality post-launch support and ongoing performance enhancements for players on existing platforms,” Lewis added. “We maintain a strong collaborative relationship with Nintendo. We are still planning to launch PGA Tour 2K25 and WWE 2K26 for the Switch 2, and we look forward to bringing more of our catalog to the platform in the future.”
Given that Borderlands 4 has faced performance hurdles even on more powerful consoles and PCs, it isn’t entirely shocking that Gearbox struggled to downscale the experience for the Switch 2’s mobile chipset. However, with pre-orders previously open and significant marketing hype generated by Pitchford, the sudden pivot to a “paused” status is a jarring turn of events for the community.
While Borderlands 4 might be missing the cut, you can still find plenty of upcoming hits on our list of the best Switch 2 games to keep an eye on.
