Few things match the boundless splendor of space — except maybe the sheer number of transformative updates No Man’s Sky has received since its 2016 launch. What began with mixed reviews has been systematically rebuilt into one of gaming’s most impressive turnarounds. Little wonder, then, that just over a month after the inventive Voyagers update, Hello Games has followed up with a moody, seasonal Breach update.
Breach is unapologetically a Halloween-themed expansion, delving into the darker, stranger corners of the cosmos. It feels partly like an existential celebration after No Man’s Sky briefly drew 110,893 concurrent players last month on SteamDB — more than half of its all-time high of 212,613 reached soon after launch — but a present stamped with a skull is welcome all the same. Scavenging these derelicts can yield rare vertical components that open up new construction possibilities, though the menacing Fireship Arcadia may dampen any architect’s enthusiasm.
Hello Games adds that the spooky Breach Expedition leans into the darker side of the cosmos and will draw daring Travelers toward the ominous purple-star systems first glimpsed in Worlds Part II earlier this year.
The Expedition runs for three weeks, and the Breach update is free to all existing No Man’s Sky players.
No Man’s Sky’s biggest flaw in 2025 may be that it’s too compelling — and now I’m trapped in a delicious loop.
