Nintendo Fulfills 12-Year Promise by Adding Non-Binary Characters and Queer Relationships to Tomodachi Life

A Mii character expressing affection in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream

While fans initially celebrated this progress, the excitement was dampened by a new support article on Nintendo’s official site. The document reveals that the publisher is implementing strict “restrictions on certain image sharing features” for the upcoming title.

Nintendo explained their stance by stating, “We aim to provide a space where players can enjoy their Mii characters freely. In Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, this autonomy often leads to quirky or unpredictable gameplay. While these moments are part of the fun, we believe that out-of-context screenshots could be easily misinterpreted or fail to reflect the intended spirit of the game.”

While the English support page remains somewhat vague, the Japanese website provides more granular details. According to translations, players will be unable to transfer images directly to smartphones, post them to social media platforms, or use the automatic upload features exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2. For now, it seems the only way to share these moments is through the system’s Game Chat function.

The core appeal of Tomodachi Life has always been the bizarre, shareable interactions between Miis, making Nintendo’s decision to lock down these features feel counterintuitive. While the company likely wants to prevent the creation of offensive content or the misuse of celebrity-inspired Miis, many fans feel this move stifles the very community spirit that made the original game a cult classic.
