In a recent interview with Variety, Druckmann offered cautious teasers and reiterated familiar claims about Intergalactic, describing it as Naughty Dog’s most ambitious and expansive undertaking to date.
“I can tell you we’re in the thick of it. We’re making it, we’re playing it. We’re firing on all cylinders,” Druckmann said. “I’ve said this before, but I really mean it, I’m really feeling it right now: it’s the most ambitious game we’ve ever made. It’s the most expansive game we’ve ever made, maybe the most expensive, by the time we finish it.”
More notably, he implied the trailer doesn’t represent the full scope of the project.
“I’m eager to show and discuss more because the trailer we released doesn’t even scratch the surface of what this game actually is,” he explained. “But when you’re announcing a new IP — especially something coming out of Naughty Dog — you have to coordinate with marketing, PR and a lot of other teams. It would be premature for me to give a timeline for further reveals.”
We still haven’t seen gameplay, although Druckmann has hinted that he drew inspiration from Elden Ring’s unconventional, gameplay-first approach to storytelling. That remark doesn’t imply Intergalactic will mirror FromSoftware’s mechanics, but it does suggest Naughty Dog may be broadening its approach beyond tightly linear, cinematic narratives.
“If you track our evolution from Uncharted — where we learned the craft of cinematic, character-driven action in a third-person shooter — then through The Last of Us, where we introduced RPG elements and broader, semi-open layouts, you can see a trajectory,” Druckmann said. “Take that forward, add science fiction, and you begin to understand the direction we’re heading. We’ve pushed ourselves even further this time.”
Intergalactic has reportedly been in development for around five years, yet Naughty Dog remains tight-lipped. As someone who counts Uncharted and The Last of Us among my favorite games, I’m wary of dramatic departures — but I’m also reassured by Naughty Dog’s track record of delivering cinematic, emotionally resonant experiences with polished action and memorable characters.
Meanwhile, a new Japan-based studio founded by developers from Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us 2 aims to build a multiplayer title with Naughty Dog-level cinematic action and a Breaking Bad-style narrative, and it’s reportedly already playable.
