The funding tracker on Roberts Space Industries’ website indicates that contributions to the project have exceeded $885 million.
Since its announcement in 2012, Star Citizen has become one of the most lucrative crowdfunding endeavors. That figure includes Kickstarter pledges, early-access purchases, in-game item sales, and private investments.
Star Citizen began as a large-scale Kickstarter campaign in October 2012, promising an expansive, player-focused space simulator. From the beginning the project was structured as a long-term, phased effort entirely supported by its community — a model that keeps backers engaged through continuous development goals and regular ship releases. Despite the steady inflow of funds, the title remains in development and is still distributed as an alpha rather than a finished product.
Reports logged $300 million by mid-2020, $400 million by the end of 2021, and $500 million by September 2022. By 2024–2025 the project had passed the $800 million mark and continued to grow.
The protracted development cycle and the lack of a 1.0 release have split the community. Some backers remain supportive of the development team, while others are vocal about their frustration with repeated delays. The debate over monetization — especially paid in-game items — has further intensified tensions.
